This volume is a collection of original essays prepared by colleagues, collaborators, and former students on the occasion of Helmut K. Anheier’s 65th birthday and retirement from the University of Heidelberg. An internationally recognized pioneer of nonprofit and civil society studies, Anheier focused his work on providing clarity around (1) civil society, local and global, observing its origins and trajectory and developing theories to explain it; (2) the nonprofit sector and institutions within and extending from it, including nonprofit organizations, philanthropy and social investment; and (3) culture as it relates to democracy and back to civil society. Unser gesellschaftliches Leben ist in der Krise. Die offentlichen Kassen sind leer und weder durch Steuern noch durch Kredite aufzuftillen. Schlimmer noch, die Politik ist mit ihren Rezepten am Ende. Diese Krise ist zugleich eine Chance: die Chance, das Mitdenken und Mitwirken vieler wieder zu aktivieren. Kunst und Kultur sind in Ent- stehung, Vermittlung und Pflege von der Krise unmittelbar betroffen. Gerade sie haben die Chance, die Zukunft aktiv mitzugestalten. Wenn staatliche Gelder fur kulturelle Aufgaben ausgegeben werden sollen, meldet sich recht schnell die "Offentlichkeit" zu Wort und erhebt Einwande. Meist wird dann die Frage gestellt, ob das zu Finanzierende eigentlich Kultur sei und ob diese kulturelle Aktivitat vom offentlichen Geldregen profitieren solle. Grund hierfur ist, dass es keine einheitliche Meinung oder gar eine fur alle verstandliche Definition zu dem gibt, was Kultur ist, und schon gar nicht, was ein forderungswurdiges kulturelles Ereignis ist Es mag aber auch daran liegen, dass es, wie der Autor zeigt, sowohl in den USA als auch in Deutschland keinen speziellen gesetzlichen Auftrag zur Kulturforderung gibt. Was finanziert werden soll, wird somit politisch entschieden, und der Streit daruber reibt sich oft an der Frage: welche Ausgabe ist sozial akzeptabel, und ist das Geforderte sozial rele vant. Kulturelle Ereignisse, die die Massen ansprechen, bedurfen oft keiner Unterstut zung, da sie sich leichter vermarkten lassen. Unterstutzungsbedurftig sind kultu relle Ereignisse, die entweder nur einen "kleinen Kreis" ansprechen oder extrem aufwendig sind. Was unterstutzungswurdig ist, wird oft von demselben "kleinen Kreis" - denn hier sitzen die Experten - festgelegt. Hier wird die Auswahl der zu fordernden Aktivitaten bestimmt und entschieden, ob der Staat die Finanzierung durch direkte Zahlungen ubernimmt oder ob private Finanzierungshilfen zur Verfugung stehen. Rein privat finanzierte kulturelle Aufgaben geben selten Anlass zur offentlichen Stellungnahme."
